But I like sugar in my tea.
I tend to use real sugar or honey, or lemon, but I am always open to trying new things!
Today, I tried “Nectresse”
Natural no calorie sweetener made from monk fruit.
It can also be used in baking.
The ingredients are:
Erythritol (sugar alcohol)
Sugar
Monk fruit extract
Molasses
It looks and feels just like a very granular sugar. The crystals taste very sweet. They have a slight orange tinge.
I added just a quarter tsp to my tea. It really was the equivalent of my usual tsp of sugar. However, there was a slight after taste. It wasn’t terrible, though. But it did remind me of Splenda. It disappeared quickly.
Erythritol, the first ingredient is chemically similar to xylitol, the sweetner found in chewing gum. Sugar alcohol does not raise blood sugar the way that sugar (glucose and fructose) will.
If you are wondering how something with sugar alcohol and sugar and molasses can have “no” calories, the secret is in the labeling. The serving size, 1 tsp has less than 5 calories, and thus can be labeled as a “no calorie” food.
According to the manufacturer, it is also considered up to two servings, as a “free” food for people with diabetes. However, this does not mean you can consume at will! Moderation is probably the rule of thumb here. This product does contain sugar.
If you have diabetes or want to cut back in sugar and want a natural sweetener that is not as “after tastey” as stevia, you might want to try this. You can order a decent-size free sample and get a coupon on the website.http://www.nectresse.com/faq
